Paramore Construction had a very large, very impressive office in downtown Seattle.

“Looks like they have more than enough to pay for a cover-up, don’t you think?” Kerry asked.

“We’ll cross that road if we come to it,” Jim answered.

The receptionist at the front desk was on a call when Jim and Kerry approached, but when Jim flashed his badge, the smile faded from the man’s face as he looked up at them.

“Can I help you, Officer?” he asked.

“Detective,” Jim corrected her. “My partner and I need to review your employee files from 1995 and 1999.”

“Um, okay,” he answered. “Let me call my manager.”

“You do that,” Jim said.

Every person who passed through the lobby of the building glanced in Jim and Kerry’s direction. It was a look Jim and Kerry were familiar with. The police made people nervous, or at the very least, it made them gossip.

“Detectives?”

Jim turned and saw a woman dressed in a red pantsuit, with black high heels, a white blouse, and a beaded gold necklace hung around her neck that looked like it was heavy enough to give her neck pain.

“I’m Julie Bulko, Human Resources Manager at Paramore Construction,” she said. “I understand you need to look at some files?”

“Yes,” Jim answered.

“Do you have a warrant?” Julie asked.

Jim expected some level of resistance, and despite what the movies and television shows portrayed, the company had a right to protect the identity of its employees. But Jim wasn’t about to give up.

“We’re investigating the disappearance of two children,” Jim said. “They occurred at homes built by Paramore Construction.”

Julie smiled. “That hardly qualifies us in any legal obligation.”

“It does when we find underground tunnels leading into ten different homes all built by this company,” Jim said.

Julie was caught off guard, and that’s exactly what Jim had wanted. Regardless of what kind of paperwork Jim did or didn’t have, allegations being thrown around, especially during the current climate, made people nervous.

“Give me just one moment,” Julie walked back to the receptionist desk, and the pair whispered to one another.

“You think that worked?” Kerry asked, keeping her voice low.

“They’re nervous,” Jim answered. “Nervous enough to give us what we want? I guess we’ll find out.”

Julie eventually walked away from the receptionist and rejoined Jim and Kerry. “If you two will follow me.” She turned, and Jim and Kerry followed Julie down a hallway.

They passed conference rooms and offices with large, windowed walls, and again Jim and Kerry found themselves the subject of intrigue and interest on their walk past.

“Here we are,” Julie said, turning into a small conference room. “If you’ll give me a moment, I’ll be right back.”

“With those files?” Jim asked.

Julie smiled politely and then vanished down the hallway.

“Well, it got us inside,” Kerry answered.

“I was hoping they’d just give us access to the files,” Jim said. “They’ll probably screen them. Without a warrant, they’re not obliged to do anything.”

“You think it was a mistake to show our cards?” Kerry asked.

“We’ll know soon enough,” Jim said.

Jim and Kerry paced the small conference room.
